The Derby Basketball Academy is a partnership between Noel-Baker Sixth Form, Derby College and the Derby Trailblazers Basketball club. It is headed by Coach Matt Shaw and Coach Paul Bowen and has been operational since September 2009.

Coach Shaw is delighted with the progress the Academy and its players are making:

"On the court the results have been excellent. But no only that, we are playing some high tempo exciting basketball. I think all the lads are improving too, which is really important," he said.

The Academy has grown rapidly throughout its short life. This year there are over 40 boys and girls studying at Noel-Baker and Derby College. The Academy is aimed at males and females aged 16-19 who wish to combine education and elite sport. Academy students enrol in full time education in their chosen subjects in addition to following a busy weekly basketball training programme.

The Trailblazers Academy have won two National Titles in its short existence, claiming the Under 17s National School Title in 2014 and the Under 19s EABL title in 2012. In the past 3 years seven Academy players have gained scholarships to U.S. universities.

The Derby Trailblazers Academy is also one of only 14 institutions licenced to deliver the elite AASE qualification.
