U16 Girls vs Leicester Warriors 04.03.17

The U16 Girls games travelled to Leicester for an away game against the Warriors at the start of a double header weekend.

The message for the team before the game was for the girls to relax, play with a smile on their face and to finish the game with no regrets. The game started at a frantic pace with the blazer girls matching the hosts for most of the first quarter. Both teams exchanging points but the Blazer girls getting a lot of opportunities with the ball just not going in for us. Going in to the break down by 4 but with a couple of the Derby girls in foul trouble already. Scorers for Derby; Miya, Hannah, Paige, Phoebe and Izzy.

The second quarter unfortunately meant that the ball even more didn’t fall for the Blazers girls as the scoring dried up almost completely with Derby scoring 6 points in the quarter when the hosts picked up 16 going in to the half time break 34-20 to the Warriors. Scorers for Derby; Paige and Miya.

The half time talk focussed much more on what worked well in the first quarter which was high intensity basketball on both ends of the floor and to take the chances when presented with them. This worked as the Blazers girls came out for the 2nd half fighting behind Phoebe’s 6 point quarter which lead the charge for the visitors. Increased defensive intensity limited the hosts to their lowest scoring quarter so far with 13 but they still managed to increase their lead to 17 overall. Scorers for Derby; Phoebe, Hannah, Paige and Miya.

The last quarter unfortunately meant the scoring dried up once again for the Blazer girls where the effort they had put in so far started to tell as they began to tire leading to a 23-8 quarter for the hosts. Scorers for Derby; Miya, Hannah and Izzy.

Comments:

‘A much improved performance all round today in what turned out to be difficult circumstances with some suspect refereeing.

The girls played with a smile on their face and definitely stuck to the message of no regrets throughout. The result ultimately wasn’t what we wanted obviously but the performance from the girls made it feel like a win. Well done all.’

Scorers:

Miya 16, Phoebe 10, Paige 6, Hannah 4, Izzy 4
