U14s Girls: Strong defensive performance as Blazers record big win in Leeds
Following an improved performance last week, the U14 girls travelled to Leeds hoping that a similar performance would see them pick up their third win of season. The task ahead of them would have to be undertaken without starting power forward Kerys Mather, which would allow for other players to step up in her absence.
Pre-game discussions focussed on making a fast start to the game and the young Blazers girls responded accordingly as Neve, Daisy, Katie J & Annelise combined for a 0-9 start to the game which included a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe. With the Blazer girls playing intense full court defence it took until the 5th minute of the game for Leeds to score their first point of the game which came from the free-throw line. The next three minutes for the home team only resulted in three points, again all from the free-throw line whilst Neve, Katie J & Lolly added an additional 9 points for the Blazers. With time expiring in the quarter the home team registered their first made field goal of the game but that didn’t stop the Blazers taking a commanding 6-18 lead into the quarter break.
The second quarter started more evenly as both teams exchanged scores before a decisive 2-9 scoring run for the Blazers which included layups for Neve & Tash pushed the lead out to 13-31 and a Leeds timeout. The pause in play momentarily stopped the Blazer onslaught as the home team managed to score back to back baskets before Neve, Daisy and a Megan Poulter jump shot gave the Derby girls a 17-36 half time lead.
As the game re-started Neve, Daisy and Katie J scored a quick fire 6 points which were almost immediately answered by 6 points for the home team. Both teams then exchanged empty possessions and a Derby time-out was called. Whereas the Derby girls still seemed full of energy the Force players were starting to get tired and the Blazer girls used this opportunity to full affect as a 3-13 scoring run which included multiple scores for Annelise and Katie J effectively sealed the game and enabled the Blazers to take a 28-57 lead into the final quarter.
With the result in the game sealed the Blazer girls could have been forgiven for taking their foot of the gas, however after exchanging scores through the first two minutes Tash, Megan Poulter, Megjie & Anna combined for the final scoring flourish of the game and with it the Blazers could celebrate a 31-73 win which included every player registering in the scoring column.
