U14 Girls: Confidence boosting win for U14 Girls
Derby U14 girls welcomed Lancashire Spinners to the Clarence Wiggins Sports Hall for their final home game before the Christmas break.
Following a number of positive performances over the last few games the young Blazer girls were determined to convert a good performance into a morale boosting win.
The game started with Neve capitalising on a loose ball and scoring the first basket of the game. Both teams then exchanged empty possessions before Spinners opened their scoring and tied the game at 2-2. With the Blazers applying full court defensive pressure the visitors were finding getting the ball over half way a difficult task. As a result the Blazer girls went on a 16-2 scoring run spearheaded by captain Neve Marvill who scored 10 personal and provided great passes for Lucy Walker, Miya & Phoebe. Following a Spinners timeout they were able to momentarily stop the Blazer onslaught before Kerys, Lucy Walker & Darcie found easy scores to send Derby into the quarter break with a 26-8 lead.
The second quarter started with 10 year old Anna running the point and she made an immediate impact as she provided scores for Miya, Darcie & back to back scores for Tash. To the visitors credit they were not prepared to wave the white flag and they managed to forced four straight turnovers and score four straight transition layups to force the home team into a time out. A reaction was needed by the Blazer girls and they got it from Neve who scored six straight points to give Derby a 40-21 half time lead.
Although the Blazers were controlling the game the half time talked called for increased physicality on the boards. The demand was duly supplied straight from start of the third quarter as Lucy Smith pulled down an offensive rebound and scored under pressure. In similar fashion to the first quarter the Spinners were able to equalise the quarter score before a decisive 13-1 scoring run which included scores for all five players on the court (Miya, Neve, Paige, Izzy & Phoebe) effectively sealed the game for the Blazers. Unfortunately for the Spinners the final moments of the third quarter didn’t get any easier for them as first Tash and then back to back layups for Darcie pushed the Blazer lead out to a 61-27 at the quarter end.
The final quarter started with a quick score for Lucy Walker before both teams exchanged points & fouls which saw multiple players take trips to the free throw line. With the visitors tiring Neve & Lucy Smith combined for a 6-0 run and with that the Derby starting five returned to the bench to a rapturous applause. With four minutes left in the game Anna was fouled whilst rebounding the ball and with the Spinners over the limit she found herself at the free throw line with a chance of scoring her first ever National League points. With an air of calmness and control the 10 year old stepped up and scored both free throws which provoked the loudest cheer of the day. The game ended with Spinners scoring the last 4 points of the game, however a well deserved big win for the Derby U14 Girls wasn’t to be denied as the final score read 77-41.
‘The girls deserved this win, it was a true 12 player effort and every player contributed positively on both ends of the court’.
‘The girls should take the confidence that winning brings but not neglect to reflect on what we need to improve on. Defensively we need to be more aggressive, especially when boxing out and rebounding, against other teams we will be punished if we don’t’.
‘I am very proud of this group; they improve every time they step on the court. We must continue this next week against Leeds in our final game of 2015’.
Neve Marvill 27, Darcie Ashley 9, Lucy Walker 6, Tash Barker 6, Miya Kelly 6, Lucy Smith 6, Phoebe Colton 4, Kerys Mather 4, Paige Ferguson 4, Anna Marvill 3, Izzy Chetwynde 2.
The girls will be away to LEEDS FORCE at Roundhay High School, on Saturday 5th December, for an 11.30am tip. Good luck to you all.
