U14 Girls: Blazers find their form to take down the Fliers

After a weekend off the U14 Girls were back in action as they faced an away trip to Rotherham to take on a Hatfield Fliers team who through their first 7 games had an equal win/loss record to the Blazers.

A strong start to the game was called for in the pre-game talk and the young Blazer girls delivered as great defence was combined with clinical finishing as Neve, Tash, Megan L combined for a 1-14 scoring run and an early time-out for the Fliers to re-group. Both teams exchanged empty possessions out of the break, at the 8-minute mark the home team registered their first field goal. This was quickly answered by a 2-10 ending to the quarter as Neve and Tash combined to give the Blazers an 8-23 lead.

The pause in play on momentarily stopped the Blazer onslaught as after a Fliers layup, Neve scored 9 straight points to force the home team into another timeout. The pressure being applied by the Blazer girls on the defensive end restricted the Fliers to low percentage shots, despite this the shots started to drop for the home team as the scored 11 points to the Blazers 6 but this didn’t deny the Blazers a well earnt 21-38 advantage at the half time break.

The third quarter started with both teams exchanging points before Neve again showed her class as she stepped up like any good captain does and scored 6 straight points to give the Blazers there biggest lead of the game at 24-48. With both teams rotating to give their starters a break the home team ceased the opportunity to string a number of stops and scores together as they reduced the deficit but still trailed at the end of the third 29-50.

Now wasn’t the time to switch off for the Blazer girls. They had played a solid 30 minutes so far but the team wanted to finish the job. The first two minutes of the final quarter started quietly for both teams, at the 2-minute mark scores for Annelise and Megija effectively extinguished any hope of a Flier comeback and the remaining minutes of the game saw both teams match each other’s scores and misses and as the final buzzer sounded the Blazers could celebrate a 47-67 win and revel in the fact that they played hard for 40 minutes to gain the win.
